Hypic Tips and Tricks: 10 Editing Techniques for Better Photos

Lynda Sumner

Learn how to remove backgrounds, blur faces, use AI expand, retouch portraits, and edit like a pro with ByteDance's photo editor.

Hypic packs enough editing power that most people barely scratch the surface of what it can do. The one-tap beauty tools are obvious. The background removal is obvious. But between the obvious stuff and the features nobody reads the documentation for, there's a middle layer of techniques that separate a decent edit from one that looks professionally done. Here are the ones worth knowing.

Hypic - Photo Editor & AI Art APK

Hypic is a photo editor app that uses AI to retouch, enhance, and style photos for quick, share ready results.

    Remove Background in One Tap

Open any photo, scroll the bottom toolbar to Background, and tap Remove. Hypic's AI segments the subject from the background automatically. The result is usually clean enough to use immediately for profile pictures, product photos, or sticker creation.

If the auto-detect misses something, hair edges get clipped, or objects bleed into the background, use the manual refine tool. Paint over the areas that need fixing with a finger swipe, and Hypic recalculates the mask in those regions only. For photos with busy backgrounds or fine details (hair, fur, lattice patterns), expect to spend 30 seconds manually refining after auto-detect.

Once the background is removed, you can replace it with a solid color, a gradient, an image from your gallery, or one of Hypic's built-in backgrounds.

    Blur Faces and Backgrounds

Hypic has two blur tools that get confused in most guides. Here's the difference:

Background blur (found under Adjust > Blur) applies a lens blur effect to the entire image except the subject. It's a portrait mode simulator , ideal for making a selfie look like it was shot with a wide-aperture lens. The blur intensity slider goes from subtle background softening to full bokeh.

Face blur (found under Retouch > Mosaic or Blur) is for privacy. Select the face or area you want to obscure, and Hypic applies a pixelation or Gaussian blur to just that region. This is useful for screenshots, group photos where someone doesn't want to be identified, or any image where you need to hide specific details.

AI Expand: Extend Your Photo Beyond the Frame

AI Expand is one of the paid Pro features, and it's genuinely impressive when it works. Crop a photo too tight or want to change the aspect ratio without losing content? AI Expand uses generative AI to fill in the missing edges.

Open a photo, go to Tools > AI Expand, and drag the canvas edges outward. Hypic generates the extended area based on the existing content; sky continues, backgrounds fill in, patterns extend. The results are best when the edges are relatively simple (sky, water, solid walls) and can get weird with complex patterns (crowded scenes, text, repeating geometric shapes).

A practical use: take a tightly cropped portrait and expand it into a wider aspect ratio for a YouTube thumbnail. The expanded edges usually look natural enough for thumbnail use even if they wouldn't hold up to pixel-level scrutiny.

    Can Hypic Edit Video?

Yes, but it's not CapCut. Hypic's video editing is limited to trimming, applying filters, and adding music. You can trim a clip, slap a retro filter on it, and export , but don't expect keyframe animation, multi-track timelines, or transitions.

For video thumbnails specifically, Hypic is better than CapCut. The face retouching and background tools work on still frames, and that's most of what thumbnail editing needs.

Batch Edit Multiple Photos at Once

The batch editing feature (Pro) is a time-saver for anyone who edits photos in volume. Select multiple photos, apply a preset, the same filter, the same retouching adjustments, the same color grade, and Hypic processes all of them at once.

The most practical use case: event photos. Shoot 50 photos at a party or wedding, select all, apply one filter and a light skin smoothing preset, and you're done in two minutes instead of an hour of individual edits.

The limitation: batch edits are uniform. You can't apply different retouching levels to different photos in the same batch. If the lighting varies widely across your set, batch processing won't fix that.

    Get Natural-Looking Skin Retouching

The default beauty settings in Hypic can be aggressive. Slide the smoothing and brightening sliders too far and faces look plastic. The trick to natural retouching: use the sliders at 20-30% of their maximum, not 70-100%.

For skin smoothing, start at 15-20% and increase only if needed. For face slimming and eye enhancement, even lower, 5-10% maximum unless you want the uncanny valley look. Hypic's AI is good enough that subtle adjustments look real; the slider exists for people who want dramatic changes, but dramatic changes are what make AI editing obvious.

Make Collages Without Leaving the App

Hypic's collage feature supports up to 9 photos in a single frame. Templates range from simple grids to magazine-style layouts with overlapping frames and text areas. The templates are more US/European in style compared to the Chinese version (Xingtu), which skews toward Asian beauty aesthetic, a useful distinction depending on what look you're going for.

For social media carousels, the collage tool plus batch export gives you a fast way to create consistently styled multi-image posts without jumping between apps.
