Gen Con 2026 Hotel and Travel Guide: Where to Stay in Indianapolis

Dorothy Morgan

Planning for Gen Con 2026? This travel guide covers downtown Indianapolis hotels, Gen Con housing, budget lodging, airport transportation, and parking tips for the convention.

Catelog

Gen Con 2026 runs July 30 through August 2 at the Indiana Convention Center and Lucas Oil Stadium in downtown Indianapolis. If you're going, you need a place to sleep. This Gen Con 2026 travel guide walks through where to stay, how to get there, and what to book early before everything fills up.

Gen Con Indy is Indianapolis's biggest annual convention. Over 70,000 attendees show up across four days (five if you count Trade Day on July 29). Hotel rooms go fast, especially the ones within walking distance of the convention center. First-timers and returning attendees both need to sort out lodging and transportation early, or they'll end up paying more and walking further.

    1. How Gen Con 2026 Hotel Booking Works

Gen Con runs an official housing system that connects attendees with partner hotels at convention rates. You won't find these rates on standard booking sites. The system typically opens in January, with specific dates announced on the Gen Con website and social channels before then. For Gen Con 2026 lodging, this portal is your best shot at the closest rooms.

Here's what to expect from the Gen Con housing process:

    • Badge first, hotel second. You need a valid Gen Con badge before you can access the housing portal, and Gen Con 2026 badges are already sold out, but waitlist and transfer options sometimes open closer to the event as attendees change their plans.
    • Housing portal access. After buying your badge, you'll get access to the housing booking site where hotels and room types are listed with convention pricing that's usually lower than what you'd find on standard booking platforms or by calling the hotel directly.
    • Rooms disappear in hours. The most popular downtown Indianapolis hotels sell out within the first day of housing opening, with JW Marriott, Hyatt Regency, and other connected properties going first because attendees prioritize skybridge access to the convention center.
    • Waitlist exists. If you miss the initial booking window, Gen Con maintains a housing waitlist that processes through spring and early summer as people cancel their reservations or change their plans.

If you're reading this after the housing portal has already opened and the partner hotels are full, don't panic. Downtown Indianapolis has over 10,000 hotel rooms within walking distance of the convention center, and plenty more a short ride away. The sections below cover your options.

    2. Downtown Indianapolis Hotels Near the Convention Center

The Indiana Convention Center (ICC) sits in the middle of downtown Indianapolis, connected to Lucas Oil Stadium by an enclosed walkway. Several hotels are physically connected to the convention center via skybridges or underground passages, meaning you can walk from your room to the gaming hall without going outside.

Connected Hotels (Skybridge Access to ICC)

These are the most convenient Gen Con accommodation options. You park once, check in, and never need your car until you leave.

    HotelRoomsConnected ToNotes
JW Marriott Indianapolis1,005ICC via skybridgeLargest connected hotel. Convention rates available through Gen Con housing.
Hyatt Regency Indianapolis499ICC via skybridgeCentral downtown location, connected to Circle Centre Mall.
Indianapolis Marriott650ICC via skybridgeRecently renovated. Part of the Marriott IndyPlace complex.
Westin Indianapolis243ICC via skybridgeSmaller, quieter option if you want fewer crowds.
Crowne Plaza Indianapolis Downtown Union Station333Short walk to ICCHistoric Union Station building. Grand Hall is a converted train station.
Embassy Suites Indianapolis Downtown249Short walk to ICCAll-suite rooms with separate living area. Good for sharing.
Hampton Inn Indianapolis Downtown113Short walk to ICCFewer rooms, competitive pricing.
Homewood Suites Indianapolis Downtown137Short walk to ICCKitchen-equipped suites. Good for longer stays.
Omni Severin Hotel424Short walk to ICCUpscale option on the south side of downtown.
Hilton Indianapolis233Short walk to ICCSolid mid-range pick near Circle Centre.

The JW Marriott is the anchor of the connected hotel package. It's the biggest property downtown, and its skybridge drops you directly into the ICC. If you can snag a room through the Gen Con housing system, grab it. It goes first every year.

The Crowne Plaza Union Station is worth a mention for its character alone. The hotel occupies the historic Indianapolis Union Station, and some rooms are converted train cars that sit right on the tracks where passengers used to board. The Grand Hall lobby is where trains used to arrive, and the architecture still carries that grand railway aesthetic from the early 1900s. You're a short walk from the ICC rather than a skybridge connection, but the trade-off is a hotel that feels like part of Indianapolis history rather than another glass tower.

Non-Connected Downtown Hotels (5-15 Minute Walk)

You don't have to be in a connected hotel to stay close. Several properties sit within a comfortable walking radius, and these convention center lodging options can be easier on your budget:

    • Le Meridien Indianapolis (Canterbury Hotel). 123 S Illinois St. Boutique feel, close to Circle Centre Mall.
    • Fairfield Inn and Suites Indianapolis Downtown. 501 W Washington St. Connected to the ICC, actually, but often overlooked. Budget-friendly Marriott brand.
    • Staybridge Suites Indianapolis Downtown. 535 S West St. All-suite extended stay property near Lucas Oil Stadium.
    • Holiday Inn Indianapolis Downtown. 1150 W Maryland St. Basic rooms, decent rates.

Walking from these properties to the ICC takes 5 to 15 minutes depending on where you're headed in the convention center. The ICC is large, so the walk from the south end (Lucas Oil Stadium) to the north end can add another 10 minutes.

Indianapolis has a new Signia by Hilton Hotel under construction, with 803 rooms expected to open in 2026. If it opens before Gen Con, it'll add 800-plus connected rooms to the downtown supply. Check current status closer to the convention.

    3. Budget-Friendly Gen Con Lodging Options

Downtown Indianapolis hotels during Gen Con are expensive. That's the reality of supply and demand during the city's biggest convention. If the partner hotel rates are too steep, you have alternatives.

Suburban Hotels with Shuttle or Drive Access

Hotels in the Keystone, Castleton, and Airport areas typically charge 30 to 50 percent less than downtown properties during Gen Con. The trade-off is transportation. You'll need a car, a ride-share, or a shuttle.

IndyGo public transit runs bus routes from the suburbs to downtown. Route 8 (Washington Street) connects the airport area to downtown. It's cheap but slow, running every 30 minutes on weekends.

Ride-share cost. An Uber or Lyft from the Keystone area to the ICC runs about $15-25 each way. From the airport area, $20-30. Split among 3-4 people, that's manageable, but it adds up over four days.

Driving yourself means paying for parking downtown, which isn't cheap (more on that below). But suburban hotels often include free breakfast and free parking, so you're trading convenience for savings on the room rate.

    Airbnb and VRBO

Short-term rentals in downtown Indianapolis neighborhoods like Lockerbie Square, Chatham Arch, and Fletcher Place put you within walking distance of the ICC at potentially lower per-person costs than hotels. A two-bedroom unit that sleeps four people can cost less per person than a single downtown hotel room.

Gen Con weekend is high demand for Airbnb too, and prices reflect that. Book early, read the cancellation policy, and confirm whether the host requires a minimum stay during major downtown events. Some listings won't accept single-night bookings when Gen Con is in town.

Shared housing with other attendees. The Gen Con forums and subreddit (r/GenCon) have threads where attendees look for roommates. Splitting a downtown hotel room four ways brings the per-person cost down fast. The trade-off is obvious: you're sharing a room with people you may not know well.

    4. Getting to Indianapolis for Gen Con

Flying In: Indianapolis International Airport (IND)

Indianapolis International Airport is about 15 minutes from downtown by car. It's a mid-size airport, easy to navigate, with a single terminal building.

    • Ground Transportation Center. The airport has a dedicated Ground Transportation Center on Level 1 of the parking garage. Taxis, ride-share pickup, and shuttle services all operate from here.
    • Ride-share. Uber and Lyft are available. Expect $20-35 to downtown hotels, depending on surge pricing. Surge is common during Gen Con arrival and departure windows.
    • Rental cars. Available on-site. If you're staying downtown and walking to the ICC, you probably don't need a car for the convention itself. But if you're in a suburban hotel, a rental makes sense.
    • Public transit. IndyGo Route 8 connects the airport to downtown for $1 per ride. Slow but functional.

    Driving to Gen Con

If you're driving to Indianapolis, plan your parking in advance. Downtown Indianapolis has limited street parking, and Gen Con weekend means every lot and garage near the ICC is packed.

From the north (Chicago area). I-65 South to downtown. About 3 hours from Chicago.

From the east (Ohio). I-70 West to downtown.

From the west (Illinois/St. Louis). I-70 East to downtown.

From the south (Louisville). I-65 North to downtown.

Indianapolis is built on a grid system with numbered streets running east-west and named streets running north-south, which makes navigation straightforward once you orient yourself. The convention center sits between West and Maryland Streets, Capitol Avenue and Senate Avenue. If your GPS says you've arrived but you don't see the entrance, circle around. The ICC has multiple entrances on different streets.

    5. Parking at the Indiana Convention Center and Lucas Oil Stadium

If you drove or rented a car, here's where to park:

ICC Underground Garage. The Indiana Convention Center has an underground parking garage with about 1,200 spaces. Access is off Georgia Street. Rate during events is typically $10-20 per day. It fills early on Gen Con weekend, especially Saturday.

Lucas Oil Stadium parking. Lucas Oil Stadium has surface lots south of the stadium on Merrill Street and Missouri Street. Rate is similar, $10-20 for event parking. These lots are closer to the south entrance of the convention center.

Street parking. Metered street parking exists downtown but is limited to 2-4 hours in most areas. Not practical for an all-day convention. Free street parking on weekends is available in some residential areas further from downtown, but the walk is 20+ minutes.

Private lots. Several private surface lots operate around the convention center. Expect $15-25 per day during Gen Con. The further you walk, the cheaper it gets.

Hotel parking. If you're staying at a downtown hotel, use the hotel's parking. It's more expensive than private lots (typically $25-40 per night for self-parking, $35-50 for valet), but you only pay once and your car is secure overnight.

    6. Timing Your Gen Con 2026 Hotel Stay

    Trade Day: July 29

Trade Day is the Wednesday before Gen Con officially opens. It features industry-focused programming for retailers, educators, and game designers. If you're attending Trade Day, you need to check in by Tuesday night or Wednesday morning. That's one extra hotel night, and it's one night that many attendees forget to book.

Trade Day attendees are a smaller crowd. The convention center feels different, calmer. Some hotels don't have their Gen Con staffing and operations fully up by Wednesday, so don't expect full service.

    Gen Con Block Party

The Gen Con Block Party happens in the Lucas Oil Stadium area on the opening night. It's a big, loud, outdoor celebration with food, drinks, and gaming. If your hotel is on the south side of downtown (near Lucas Oil Stadium), expect noise on that first night. If you're a light sleeper, request a room facing away from the stadium.

    Makers Market

The Makers Market runs in the corridor between the ICC and Lucas Oil Stadium. It's an exhibitor space for independent game designers and creators. You'll pass through it going between the two main venues. This area gets crowded midday on Saturday.

    Checkout Timing

Sunday is the last day of Gen Con, and check-out time at most hotels is 11 AM. The convention runs through Sunday afternoon. If you want to stay for Sunday events, you have two options:

    1. Late checkout. Ask your hotel at check-in. Some hotels offer late checkout during Gen Con, but it's not guaranteed.
    2. Luggage hold. Most downtown hotels will hold your luggage at the bell desk on Sunday so you can go back to the convention without dragging bags around. Use this. It's free and standard.

    7. Gen Con Hotel Tips: Quick Reference

Here are the things experienced Gen Con attendees wish they'd known the first time:

    • Book through the official Gen Con housing system when it opens in January. Convention rates are lower than walk-in rates, and you get the closest hotels. Set a calendar reminder for the housing opening date.
    • If housing is sold out, call the hotel directly. Front desk staff sometimes have access to rooms that the online portal doesn't show. Be polite, mention Gen Con, and ask about convention rates.
    • JW Marriott goes first. If you want the connected hotel with skybridge access, it sells out within hours of the housing portal opening, so have a backup choice ready and know your second and third preferences before you log in.
    • Consider Trade Day. If you're arriving Wednesday for Trade Day programming, book that extra night now. Trying to add it later is harder than booking the full stay upfront.
    • Split a room to save money. Four people in a two-bed downtown hotel room brings per-person cost to a reasonable level. Use the Gen Con subreddit or forum to find roommates.
    • Don't count on ride-share during peak hours. Friday and Saturday evenings bring heavy surge pricing to downtown Indianapolis as 70,000 attendees all try to get to restaurants and bars at the same time, making walking or the skybridge system faster than waiting for an Uber.
    • Park once, stay put. If you're driving in, park at the ICC garage or your hotel on Thursday morning and don't move your car until Sunday, because trying to find parking again each day wastes time you could spend gaming and the lots fill up faster each morning.
    • Bring a portable phone charger. Convention center outlets are scarce and contested. You'll be walking the ICC all day, checking the Gen Con app for event tickets, and taking photos. Your phone will die by 2 PM without a charger.
    • Book refundable rates if you're unsure. If your Gen Con plans aren't locked in, book a refundable hotel rate. You can always cancel if you don't get a badge or your plans change.
    • Check the hotel's walkability, not just the address. Some "downtown" hotels are a 25-minute walk from the ICC, and what looks reasonable on a map feels very different after midnight when you're tired and carrying a bag full of board game purchases from the Dealer Hall.

    Conclusion

Gen Con 2026 is going to fill downtown Indianapolis. The attendees who have the best experience are the ones who sort out their hotel and travel plans early. If you can get into the Gen Con housing system in January, do it. If you can't, downtown Indianapolis has plenty of hotels within walking distance, and the suburban options work if you plan for parking or ride-share costs.

The key decisions are simple. Pick a hotel you can afford that's close enough to walk. Arrive Wednesday if you're doing Trade Day. Park once and leave the car. Bring a phone charger. Set a calendar alert for the housing portal opening date. Everything else about Gen Con, you can figure out when you get there. Where to eat? Downtown Indianapolis has St. Elmo Steak House, Punch Bowl Social, and dozens of options within walking distance. What to pack? Comfortable shoes and a phone charger.
