Claude Chrome Extension: How to Use Claude in Browser

Candida Corkery

What is the Claude Chrome extension? Learn how to install and use Claude in Chrome to browse the web, fill forms, debug sites, and automate browser tasks with AI.

The Claude Chrome extension — officially called "Claude in Chrome" — lets Claude control your browser directly. Not a sandboxed copy or a headless instance. Your actual Chrome browser, with your logins, your bookmarks, your extensions. Claude can open tabs, click buttons, fill forms, read page content, and debug web applications, all from a conversation in Claude Code or the Claude desktop app.

This is a beta feature, and it's limited to Claude Pro, Max, Team, and Enterprise subscribers. Worth it? If you do any web development, data entry, or research that involves clicking through websites, it's worth understanding what this extension can do.

What the Claude Chrome Extension Actually Does

The extension bridges Claude's reasoning ability and Chrome's browsing capability. Sound useful? Once connected, you can tell Claude to open your local dev server, fill in a login form with test credentials, submit it, and report back whether the redirect works — all while you stay in your terminal.

This isn't just a convenience feature. It solves a real development workflow problem: the loop where you write code in your editor, switch to a browser to test it, find something wrong, switch back to fix it, switch again to verify. With the Claude in Chrome extension, that loop collapses into a single conversation. Claude modifies the code, opens the browser, tests the change, reads console errors, and offers a fix — all without you touching the browser at all.

Beyond development, the extension handles any browser-based task. Research across multiple tabs, data extraction from web pages, automated form filling, and multi-step workflows on sites that require login — if you can do it in Chrome, Claude can do it through the extension.

    Installing the Claude Chrome Extension

You need three things before the installation.

    • First, a paid Claude subscription. The Chrome integration doesn't work on the free tier or through third-party API providers like Amazon Bedrock or Google Vertex AI. You need a direct Anthropic plan — Pro at $20/month is the entry point.
    • Second, Google Chrome or Microsoft Edge. Other Chromium-based browsers (Brave, Arc, Opera) aren't supported. The extension won't work in Firefox or Safari either.
    • Third, Claude Code CLI version 2.0.73 or newer. Check your version with claude --version and update if needed. If you don't have Claude Code installed yet, see our installation guide.
    • Open Chrome and go to the Chrome Web Store. Search for "Claude in Chrome" or use the direct extension link from Anthropic's documentation. Click "Add to Chrome" and confirm the permissions prompt.
    • After installation, you'll see the Claude icon in your extensions bar. Click it and sign in with your Anthropic account — the same one you use for Claude Code or claude.ai. This is what links the extension to your Claude session.

The extension installs a Native Messaging Host — a small background component that lets Claude Code communicate with Chrome. On macOS, it lives at ~/Library/Application Support/Google/Chrome/NativeMessagingHosts/. On Windows, it's in AppData. This host runs locally and doesn't send your browsing data to Anthropic's servers beyond what Claude needs to complete your specific task.

    Connecting Claude to Chrome

Open a terminal and launch Claude Code with the Chrome flag:

    claude --chrome

If Claude Code is already running, type /chrome in the session and select "Enable" from the menu. You'll see a status indicator showing whether the extension is connected. If it says "Extension: Installed" and "Status: Connected," you're ready.

The first time you connect, Chrome might ask you to confirm that Claude Code can communicate with the extension. Approve it. This prompt appears once per Chrome profile.

Now Claude can control your browser. Start with something simple to confirm everything works:

    > Open google.com and search for Anthropic's latest blog post. Tell me the title.

Claude opens a new Chrome tab, navigates to Google, types the search, scans the results, and reports back. You'll see the mouse moving and pages loading — Claude operates your actual browser, so everything is visible in real time.

What You Can Do with Claude in Chrome

The use cases fall into a few main categories.

Web application debugging is the most common. You're building a React app, something's broken, and you can't tell if it's a frontend or backend issue. Tell Claude: "Open localhost:3000/login, try logging in with email test@example.com and password test123, and read the console for errors." Claude navigates to your dev server, fills in the form, clicks submit, reads console output and network requests, and tells you exactly what went wrong.

Form automation covers batch data entry and repetitive workflows. If you need to fill in the same form across dozens of pages — updating metadata in a CMS, entering survey data, populating CRM records — Claude can do it. You describe the fields and the data, and Claude clicks through the pages.

Data extraction is useful for research and competitive analysis. "Go to the first page of Google results for 'project management tools,' open each result, and extract the pricing tier and key features from every product page into a markdown table." Claude opens each tab, reads the content, and compiles a structured summary.

Design verification catches visual regressions. After making CSS changes, tell Claude "open the staging site at staging.example.com, take a screenshot of the hero section, and compare it to the Figma design I uploaded earlier." Claude captures the rendered page and flags discrepancies.

Multi-tab workflows coordinate across sites. "Open my GitHub PR, read the review comments, then open the corresponding Jira ticket and update the status based on what the reviewers said." Claude moves between tabs, reads context from each, and performs the appropriate actions.

Privacy and Security: What Claude Sees

This is your real browser with your real logins, so the privacy question matters.

Claude only accesses the browser when you explicitly ask it to. It doesn't run in the background or monitor your browsing passively. Each browser action — opening a tab, clicking a button, reading page content — happens in response to a specific instruction.

The Native Messaging Host communicates locally between Claude Code and Chrome. Page content, form data, and screenshots are sent to Anthropic's servers for Claude to process, just like any other message you send to Claude. Anthropic's standard data policies apply: Pro and Max plan data may be used for training unless you opt out, while Team and Enterprise data is excluded.

You can restrict which websites Claude can access. In the extension settings, you'll find a domain allowlist. By default, Claude can navigate anywhere. If you're concerned about sensitive sites, add only the domains you use for development or research. Claude won't be able to open pages outside the allowlist.

For extra caution, create a separate Chrome profile for Claude sessions. This keeps your personal browsing history, bookmarks, and saved passwords isolated from what Claude can access. You can switch profiles quickly from Chrome's profile menu in the top-right corner.

The Extension vs. Other Browser AI Tools

Claude in Chrome isn't the only AI browser tool out there. It's useful to know how it compares.

Codex for Chrome (OpenAI's equivalent) takes a different technical approach. Codex uses Chrome extension APIs to execute JavaScript directly in your tabs — it reads the DOM programmatically rather than visually. This is faster and more reliable for data extraction, but it exposes less of the rendered page state. Claude's approach is screenshot-based, which means it sees what you see but runs slower.

Agent-browser and Playwriter are community tools that also connect AI agents to browsers. They're open source and more flexible in some ways, but they don't have Anthropic's model behind them and require more setup. They're good alternatives if you want full control over how the browser connection works.

Traditional browser automation tools like Playwright and Puppeteer are headless — they don't use your actual browser with your actual logins. They're better for automated testing in CI pipelines. Claude in Chrome is better for interactive development and ad-hoc tasks where you need your real browsing context.

Tips for Using Claude in Chrome Effectively

Be specific about which tab Claude should work with. If you have multiple tabs open, tell Claude "in the tab showing the dashboard" or "in the tab with the URL containing 'admin'." This prevents Claude from clicking around in the wrong context.

Break multi-step workflows into checkpoints. Instead of "do everything and tell me when it's done," say "first open the login page and fill in the form, then wait for me to confirm before submitting." This gives you a chance to verify each step and catch mistakes early.

When debugging, ask Claude to read the console and network tabs. These are the two richest sources of debugging information in any web app. Claude can parse stack traces, identify failed API calls, and correlate frontend errors with backend issues.

For data extraction, specify the output format upfront. "Put the results in a markdown table with columns for product name, pricing tier, and key features." This saves you from reformatting Claude's output after the task is done.

Close tabs Claude no longer needs. The extension doesn't automatically close tabs after finishing a task, and leaving dozens of tabs open degrades Chrome's performance. Tell Claude "close all tabs except the current one" when a workflow finishes.

    Current Limitations

The extension is still in beta, and a few rough edges are worth knowing about.

Complex single-page applications with heavy JavaScript and dynamic rendering can confuse Claude's screenshot-based approach. Is the page loading async? Does it use hover states for navigation? Claude might not capture the full state.

Captchas and two-factor authentication screens block Claude mid-task. The extension can't solve CAPTCHAs, and it pauses when it hits a 2FA prompt. You'll need to handle these manually, after which Claude picks up where it left off.

Session timeouts on websites you haven't visited in a while can interrupt workflows. If Claude is working through a multi-step process on a site with aggressive session expiry, it might hit a login wall and stop. Keep this in mind for long-running tasks on banking, healthcare, or enterprise portals.

Performance on very old or very unusual websites isn't guaranteed. The extension works reliably on modern, well-structured sites. On legacy corporate portals with nested iframes and ancient JavaScript, Claude might struggle to locate elements correctly.

    Conclusion

The Claude Chrome extension makes Claude's reasoning available inside your browser — not as a sidebar chatbot, but as an agent that can navigate, click, read, and automate. For developers, it closes the loop between writing code and testing it in a browser. For anyone doing data work, research, or repetitive web tasks, it eliminates the clicking that fills the gaps between actual thinking.

It requires a paid Claude plan and works only in Chrome or Edge. Setup takes about five minutes — install the extension, connect Claude Code, and give it a simple task to verify everything is wired up. After that, you'll find yourself delegating browser tasks you used to do manually.

To use Claude across all your devices, download the Claude app from APKPure. The mobile app syncs with your Claude account and gives you access to conversations, file uploads, and the full model lineup wherever you are.
