Claude Pricing: Plans and Subscriptions Explained

Candida Corkery

Claude pricing broken down: Free vs Pro (0/mo) vs Max (00-00/mo) vs Team (5/seat) vs Enterprise. Find out what each plan gives you and which one is worth it.

Claude is Anthropic's AI assistant, and like most AI tools, you can start using it for free. But if you're asking what each plan gets you — and whether moving up a tier makes sense — the answer depends on how you use it.

The lineup goes Free, Pro, Max (two levels), Team, and Enterprise, plus a separate API option. Prices run from $0 to $200 a month for individuals, with custom pricing for larger organizations. Here's what each plan includes.

What You Get With the Free Claude Plan

The free tier gives you access to Claude through the web app and mobile apps at claude.ai, no payment needed. You're limited to using the Claude Sonnet model — the faster, balanced option in Anthropic's lineup. Daily message caps apply, typically around 10 to 20 exchanges, though the exact number shifts with server load.

Free works for casual questions, quick summaries, and testing whether Claude fits your workflow. It doesn't include access to Claude Code or Cowork, and you won't get the Opus model (Anthropic's most capable offering). If you're just curious about what Claude can do, start here. If you're already sure you'll use it daily, you'll hit the limit fast.

    Claude Pro: $20/Month

Pro is the plan most individual users land on. For $20 a month (or $200 annually at a discount), it roughly gives you five times the free tier's message capacity. You also get access to all Claude models — including the flagship Opus series — plus Claude Code support and the Cowork desktop agent feature.

What makes Pro worth it for many people isn't just more messages. It's that you stop constantly watching the limit bar. You can use Claude as a daily work tool — writing, analyzing documents, debugging code — without hitting a wall by mid-morning. The model access is the real differentiator: Opus handles complex reasoning and long documents more reliably than Sonnet.

    Claude Max: $100 to $200/Month

Max splits into two tiers. The $100/month plan (Max 5x) gives you roughly 25 times the free tier's capacity. The $200/month plan (Max 20x) bumps that to about 100 times. Both include all Pro features plus higher priority during peak hours and bigger file upload limits.

Max targets heavy users — developers running Claude Code for hours at a stretch, researchers processing mountains of documents, or people who treat Claude as their primary work tool across a full day. The key advantage over Pro isn't just more quota. It's that Max lets you use Opus inside Claude Code (Pro restricts you to Sonnet in the coding tool). If your work depends on Opus-level reasoning inside a development environment, Max is the only individual path.

    Claude Team: $25/Seat/Month

Team is aimed at organizations. At $25 per person per month (minimum 5 seats), it includes everything Pro offers plus centralized billing, admin controls, and a shared workspace. The higher per-seat message limits compared to Pro make it practical for teams where multiple people use Claude throughout the day.

Team also gates access to Claude for Word and Claude for PowerPoint — the Office-integrated versions of Claude — along with the private plugin marketplace for enterprise-grade MCP servers.

    Claude Enterprise

Enterprise is custom-priced and adds SOC 2 compliance, SSO, audit logging, and dedicated support. It's for large organizations that need security certifications and admin tooling rather than individuals asking about cost. Anthropic doesn't publish a price for this tier; you contact sales.

Claude API: Pay as You Go

There's a separate path entirely: the Anthropic API. Instead of a monthly subscription, you pay per token. Sonnet costs roughly $3 per million input tokens and $15 per million output tokens. Opus runs higher — around $15/$75 per million input/output. New API users get a small free credit to test, and billing scales with actual use.

API makes sense if you're building applications that call Claude programmatically, or if you use Claude Code through an API key rather than a subscription login. The API also gives you access to features like the 1 million token context window (in beta) and extended thinking controls.

Which Claude Plan Should You Pick?

If you're trying Claude for the first time, stay on Free until you know you'll use it regularly. Jump to Pro once daily limits start interrupting your work. It's the sweet spot for most people.

Pick Max 5x if you code heavily with Claude Code and Pro's limits cramp your flow. Max 20x makes sense if you're running multiple Claude instances simultaneously or doing research that consumes long context windows. Team is the clear choice for groups that need shared billing and admin features.

The API track is its own thing — choose it when you're integrating Claude into software rather than using it through the chat interface.
