The reasoning improvements are substantial. On benchmark tests, Gemini 2.5 scored significantly higher on complex multi-step reasoning tasks than 2.0. In practical terms, this means the model is better at tasks like analyzing a contract for unfavorable clauses and explaining the implications in plain language, debugging code across multiple files where the bug isn't in the function that's failing, and following technical instructions that span dozens of steps without losing track of earlier requirements.

The coding upgrade is the most noticeable improvement for developers. Gemini 2.5 generates cleaner code with fewer bugs, handles larger codebases thanks to an expanded context window, and produces more idiomatic code that follows language conventions rather than generic AI patterns.

The context window expanded significantly. Gemini 2.0 could handle roughly 100,000 tokens of context, about the length of a short novel. Gemini 2.5 can handle up to 1 million tokens, enough for an entire codebase, a book series, or hours of video transcription.

2. Image Generation Improvements

Gemini 2.5 improved image generation through the Imagen 3 model. The outputs are more photorealistic when realism is requested, better at following detailed prompts with multiple specific elements, and improved at text rendering within images, a common AI image generation failure point.

The image generation in Gemini 2.5 won't replace dedicated tools like Midjourney for professional creative work, but it's competitive for everyday use, social media graphics, concept illustrations, and quick visual explanations.

Gemini 2.0 vs Gemini 2.5: What Hasn't Changed

The core Gemini Pro model is still the free tier. The Ultra model in Gemini 2.5 is still behind the Advanced subscription. The pricing structure and Google One integration haven't changed with the model updates.
The Android integration is the same. Gemini still replaces Google Assistant at the system level, and the interaction model hasn't changed. What's improved is what happens under the hood when you ask a question.
