Google September 2026 Android Drop: Gemini Item Memory Leads Five New Features

Google's September 2026 Android Drop adds five features, led by Gemini item memory in Find Hub. Motion Assist, Guided Vision, and Messages updates are included.

Google announced its September 2026 Android Drop on September 1, and this isn't another minor refresh. Five features span Android 9 through Android 17, with the headliner being a Gemini capability that requires zero hardware. If you've ever forgotten where you put your passport or spare keys, this update solves that without a tracker tag.

Erik Kay, VP of Engineering for Android Core Platform, authored the announcement. The five features collectively span seven Android versions, meaning readers on older but still-active hardware will gain access to at least some of the update. Here's what's new and why it matters.

    Google’s Find Hub APK

Google’s Find Hub is a device management app that helps locate and secure Android devices and accessories.

    1. Gemini Remembers Where You Left Your Keys in Find Hub

The standout feature of this Android update is item memory inside Find Hub. Until now, Find Hub's usefulness depended almost entirely on hardware: a Bluetooth tracker, a Google-connected device, or a UWB tag attached to the thing you wanted to find. The September 2026 Android Drop breaks that hardware dependency.

You tell Gemini, "Hey Google, remember in Find Hub that I put my passport in my bedroom drawer," and you can attach a photo. That location note gets saved to a new Remembered tab inside Find Hub. You can browse it later or ask Gemini a follow-up voice query to pull it up. "Where did I put my passport?" returns the saved note.

The practical breadth of this Gemini feature goes beyond passports. Spare keys, medication bottles, seasonal items stored in a garage, chargers that migrate around a home, gaming controllers. Anything you want to mentally offload, Gemini stores the verbal or photographic record and makes it retrievable through the same conversational interface. No extra hardware to buy, pair, charge, or replace batteries for.

One thing to keep straight: this isn't live tracking. Gemini records what you tell it at the moment you tell it. If you move the item and don't update Gemini, the saved location stays stale. It's an AI-mediated spatial memory note, not a real-time locator. That distinction matters if you're expecting Find Hub to replace a physical tracker tag for something that actually moves around. The Gemini item memory feature is rolling out soon to Android 16 and above, in countries where both Gemini and Find Hub are supported.

    2. Motion Assist Tackles Motion Sickness at the System Level

Android phones have had a well-documented gap with iPhones since Apple launched Vehicle Motion Cues in iOS 18 back in 2024. Motion Assist, now rolling out on Android 17, is Google's native answer.

Motion sickness in a moving vehicle happens because of vestibulo-ocular conflict. Your inner ear detects acceleration, braking, and turning. Your eyes stay fixed on a stationary phone screen. The brain receives two conflicting signals about the body's motion state, and that conflict produces nausea, dizziness, and headache.

Motion Assist addresses this by adding a subtle animated bubble overlay at the edges of the screen that moves in synchrony with vehicle motion data from the phone's accelerometer and gyroscope. By giving the visual system a dynamic reference point that matches what the inner ear detects, the feature partially reconciles the sensory conflict. The degree of relief varies by individual. No feature of this type eliminates motion sickness for everyone, but the vestibular mechanism behind it is well established.

The important difference from earlier third-party Android apps like KineStop is that Motion Assist runs at the system level. It uses Android's dedicated DRAW_MOTION_CUES permission, which allows the overlay to appear over any app surface, including system settings panels, without the false-positive behavior that plagued app-based workarounds. Those apps would sometimes stay active while you were walking, which defeated the purpose.

You can customize the bubble's color, shape, and opacity. Motion Assist can be set to activate automatically when the phone detects it's in a moving vehicle, added to the Quick Settings panel for manual toggle, or both. Available now on phones running Android 17.

    3. Guided Vision Brings Live AI Scene Description to Android 9+

Guided Vision is the accessibility headliner of this Android Drop. Developed, as Google puts it, "for and with the blind and low-vision communities," it extends Gemini Live's camera-sharing mode to provide real-time spoken descriptions of whatever the phone's camera points at.

Practical uses include reading fine print on a food label, identifying an item on a shelf, or reading a menu in a low-lit restaurant. Where Guided Vision goes beyond earlier accessibility tools like TalkBack's static image description is its conversational and positional guidance component. If the camera isn't aimed correctly, Guided Vision provides verbal instructions. Pan left. Center the object. That live, back-and-forth interaction with the camera feed runs on Gemini Live's real-time multimodal inference, processing both the camera stream and voice input at the same time.

Guided Vision is accessible from TalkBack's menu, an Android Accessibility shortcut (a floating icon at the screen edge), or from Gemini App Settings. Google's disclaimer is explicit: Guided Vision can make mistakes and isn't intended as a medical device, mobility aid, or substitute for safe-travel guides. It should not be used for navigation or obstacle detection.

Coming soon to phones running Android 9 and above in countries where Gemini is available. That's a notably wide reach, given that Android 9 was released in August 2018. A phone from eight years ago can get this Gemini feature.

    Google Messages APK

Google Messages is a messaging app that combines SMS, MMS, and RCS for modern conversations.

    CommunicationChat

    4. Google Keep Notes Come to Google Messages

Google Messages is now integrating Google Keep directly into conversation threads. Tapping the plus icon inside a chat surfaces the option to create a new Keep note or attach an existing one. The note renders inline in the thread, and every participant can view, edit, and add to it in real time without leaving Messages.

This suits shared grocery lists, vacation planning, meeting notes, and any scenario where a back-and-forth message thread creates friction that a collaboratively editable document eliminates. The Keep integration began rolling out September 1 in Google Messages. A "Create list" suggestion may also appear when the context calls for it, powered by Gemini Intelligence on supported devices.

    5. Chat Themes Personalize Each Google Messages Conversation

Google Messages has also received custom Chat Themes. You can assign a unique background wallpaper to any individual conversation, either from Google's library or a personal photo. Chat bubble colors adapt automatically to the chosen background, or you can override them manually.

It's a small addition but a noticeable one if you've been staring at the same default Messages background for years. The feature is available now in Google Messages and doesn't require a specific Android version beyond an updated app.

What This Android Update Means for Your Device

The September 2026 Android Drop matters for different reasons depending on your device. If you're on Android 16 or newer, the Gemini item memory feature is the one to watch. It changes how you track belongings without buying tracker tags. For Android 17 users, Motion Assist brings a system-level answer to motion sickness that third-party apps couldn't deliver properly. And if you're running a phone from 2018 with Android 9, you can still get Guided Vision. That's rare for a monthly Android system update.

The spread across Android versions means users on older hardware gain access to at least some of the update. Motion Assist is restricted to Android 17 for now. Google hasn't confirmed a timeline for broader compatibility. The Google Messages features (Keep integration and Chat Themes) don't have a minimum Android version beyond an updated app.

One thing worth noting: the Gemini item memory feature depends on both Gemini and Find Hub being supported in your country. If either service isn't available where you live, that feature won't show up regardless of your Android version.

    Google Gemini APK

Google Gemini is a productivity and creativity app that supports live conversations and multimodal creation.

    ProductivityAI Chatbot

    ProductivityAI Chatbot

If you've been waiting for a reason to use Gemini more actively, this Android Drop gives you several. Item memory alone solves a real problem that tracker tags couldn't address without extra hardware. Motion Assist closes a two-year gap with Apple on motion sickness. Guided Vision brings AI scene description to phones old enough to vote. Download Gemini app from APKPure to get all the latest features, and keep your Android device updated to make the most of what this drop delivers.
