Grok AI Image Generator: Aurora Guide

2026-08-06
This article covers how to use xAI's image creation tool, features, free vs paid access, prompts, and how it compares to DALL-E.
Aurora is xAI's AI image generator, built directly into Grok. Describe what you want and Grok creates it. Aurora produces photorealistic images with notably fewer content restrictions than DALL-E (ChatGPT) or Imagen (Gemini).
It's available to all Grok users — free tier with limits, SuperGrok with higher limits and fewer restrictions.
How to Generate Images with Aurora
In the Grok app or Grok web interface, describe the image you want in the chat box. Grok detects that you want an image and routes your request to Aurora. Images appear in the chat within seconds.
A good Aurora prompt covers four things:
- Subject. What's in the image? Being specific matters. "A golden retriever puppy sleeping on a wooden porch" gets you much better results than "a dog."
- Style. How should it look? "Photorealistic," "oil painting," "cinematic," "vintage photograph," "anime style." Aurora handles a wide range of styles.
- Setting. Where is it? "In a sunlit garden," "on a rainy New York street at night," "in a futuristic city with neon lights."
- Composition. How is it arranged? "Close-up portrait," "wide landscape shot," "bird's eye view."
Good prompt: "A golden retriever puppy sleeping on a wooden porch in afternoon sunlight, photorealistic style, shallow depth of field, warm tones."
You can iterate on the image: "Make the lighting warmer," "Zoom out to show the whole porch," "Change the dog to a black lab." Grok remembers context and adjusts.
What Makes Aurora Different
- Fewer content restrictions. Aurora can generate images of public figures and creative concepts that DALL-E and other generators block. This is a deliberate choice by xAI — they position Aurora as having fewer guardrails than competitors.
- Photorealism focus. Aurora excels at photorealistic images. It produces convincing human faces, natural lighting, and realistic textures. For stylized art (illustrations, paintings, vector graphics), other generators sometimes produce more polished results.
- Tight Grok integration. You can chat about an image concept, generate it, discuss what you like and don't like, and iterate — all in one conversation. There's no separate image generation interface.
Aurora Free vs SuperGrok
The free tier limits how many images you can generate per day and restricts certain content types. SuperGrok ($30/month) gives you higher limits, faster generation, and fewer content restrictions.
For casual image generation — a few images a week — the free tier is enough. For regular use, SuperGrok's higher limits are worth it. Serious creative work may still benefit from dedicated tools like Midjourney.
Aurora vs DALL-E vs Midjourney
DALL-E (ChatGPT) produces more polished, consistent images but has strict content policies. Midjourney is the gold standard for artistic quality but requires Discord and a separate subscription. Aurora sits in between — good photorealism, fewer restrictions, and integrated into the Grok chat experience you already use.
