Pokémon GO Fest 2026 Mega Finale brings Mega Mewtwo raids, Super Mega Raids, and Armored Mewtwo's return. Here's everything announced for September.

Pokémon GO Fest 2026 is getting a proper sendoff. The Mega Finale, a free global event running through September 2026, closes out the game's 10th anniversary year with the one Mega Evolution trainers have been waiting for years: Pokémon GO Mega Mewtwo. Both forms arrive, and they're joined by a brand new raid tier called Super Mega Raids and the long-absent Armored Mewtwo. If you skipped the live announcements, here's what actually got revealed and why it matters.

Super Mega Raids Are a New Raid Tier

Pokémon GO Super Mega Raids are the other headline addition. This is a new raid difficulty sitting above the standard Mega Raids, and the Mega Finale is where it goes live for the wider player base.

What changes in a Super Mega Raid, exactly? The boss is tougher, the recommended group size is larger, and the rewards scale up to match. Think of it as the Mega version of the Elite Raids that rolled out a few years back: fewer, harder encounters with bigger payoffs. Niantic first tested the format during the in-person GO Fest stops, and now it's rolling out globally as part of the Mega Finale.

For solo and small-group players, this is a real shift. A standard Mega Raid can be handled by a handful of prepared trainers. A Super Mega Raid pushes you toward coordination with your local community or a remote raiding group. Whether that's a good thing depends on how active your area still is.

Armored Mewtwo Returns After Six Years

The surprise for longtime players is Armored Mewtwo. The armored variant, last seen in raids back in 2019 and early 2020, returns for special raids during the Mega Finale. That's a six-year gap, which is why it's been one of the most requested returns in the game.

Armored Mewtwo was never the strongest Mewtwo. It trades raw attack power for a bulkier, more defensive stat line that made it a niche pick in Ultra League. Its real value has always been rarity. Plenty of trainers missed it the first time around, and its return means a second shot at a Pokémon that had effectively become a collector's trophy.

Not everyone is thrilled about that. A chunk of the veteran community has pushed back, arguing that bringing Armored Mewtwo back "ruins" the rarity that made it special. It's the same argument that follows every rare Pokémon re-release, and it's worth knowing the mood before you join a raid lobby.

Pokémon GO Mega Finale Dates and Schedule

The Pokémon GO Mega Finale runs through September 2026, with the big Mega Mewtwo raids landing on the event's key weekend. Armored Mewtwo appears in its own special raid windows alongside them, so you won't have to pick one or the other if you plan around the schedule.

There's also a companion event called Mega Ascension running in the same window. That one is built around unlocking and powering up Mega Evolutions, with its own raid lineup and bonuses. If Mega Mewtwo is the main course, Mega Ascension is the setup that gets your Mega Energy and candy reserves in shape first.

What the Pokémon GO Mega Finale Means for Trainers

The Mega Finale reads as Niantic tying up the Mega Evolution storyline it started back in 2020. Mega Mewtwo was the last marquee Mega missing from the roster, and Super Mega Raids give the whole system a late-game difficulty spike. This isn't a quiet seasonal update. It's a capstone.

For most players, the practical takeaway is simple: grab Mega Mewtwo while it's here. Mega Evolutions rotate, and Mewtwo's debut window won't last forever. If you've been sitting on a high-IV Mewtwo, this is the event to Mega Evolve it and bank the Mega Energy for later.

The game is already out and free to play, so there's nothing to pre-order or wait on. Grab the latest version of Pokémon GO below so you have the current build before the raids start. Then check your local raid groups, because Super Mega Raids are the kind of thing you'll want a full lobby for.
