What Is Hypic? Quick Guide to ByteDance's AI Photo Editor (GT)

Hypic is a mobile photo editor that uses AI to retouch faces, remove backgrounds, and transform photos into artwork. It's built by ByteDance, the company behind TikTok, and has passed 70 million downloads as of 2026. If you've seen impossibly smooth selfies with painterly backgrounds on Instagram or TikTok, there's a decent chance they went through Hypic.

The One-Sentence Pitch

Take a photo, tap one button, and AI handles the editing that used to require Photoshop skills, face retouching, background cleanup, color grading, and style transfer.

What It Actually Does

Open a selfie, and Hypic maps your facial features, eyes, nose, jawline, cheekbones - in under a second. From there you get sliders for skin smoothing, blemish removal, face slimming, eye enhancement, and body shaping. The default settings are aggressive, but dialed down to 20-30%, the results look like good lighting and makeup rather than obvious editing.

For backgrounds, the one-tap removal tool separates subjects from their surroundings cleanly enough for profile pictures and product shots. AI Expand (Pro) uses generative AI to extend photos beyond their original frame, turning a tight portrait into a wider landscape composition.

The filter library ranges from standard color grades (vintage film, moody tones, warm glow) to the 2026 artistic additions (oil painting, watercolor, anime conversion, 3D render).
