Call of Duty: Modern Warfare IV

The biggest FPS franchise, playable for the first time in Europe

Activision is putting Call of Duty: Modern Warfare IV front and center at the Xbox booth with 6v6 multiplayer running on Xbox Series X hardware. If you missed the recent beta, this is your chance to feel the gunplay changes and movement tweaks that define this year's entry. The campaign continues the Modern Warfare storyline, but the Gamescom 2026 demo focuses on multiplayer. Modern Warfare IV launches October 23 for PS5, Xbox Series X, PC, and Switch 2. So this is one of the few Gamescom 2026 playable games you'll be able to buy within weeks of playing the demo.

    Gears of War: E-Day

The origin story fans have wanted for years, and it's Xbox exclusive

The Coalition is bringing Gears of War: E-Day to Gamescom 2026 as a first public playable demo. This prequel takes players back to the beginning of the Locust War. It shows how Marcus Fenix and Dominic Santiago's brotherhood formed under fire. If you've been waiting for Gears to return to its darker, grittier roots, the E-Day demo is the one to line up for. Playground Games shows real gameplay for the first time

Fable 4 gets its first public gameplay demonstration at the Xbox booth, with Playground Games running live footage that highlights the combat system. The series is known for its wit and moral choices, and this reboot has been in development long enough that people are genuinely curious whether it can recapture the magic. The Gamescom 2026 demo focuses on the fluid combat and the hero's path through the world. Hayley Atwell plays the main antagonist, which is a nice surprise. Big casting choice.

Metro 2039 is confirmed for a world premiere at Gamescom's Opening Night Live on August 25, and it's also playable at the Xbox booth. 4A Games built this first-person shooter as a return to post-apocalyptic Moscow. Expect exploration and scavenging mechanics that push beyond the linear structure of earlier entries. The game launches in February 2027. Halo: Campaign Evolved

The game that started Xbox, remade for every platform

Halo: Campaign Evolved is a faithful remake of Halo: Combat Evolved's campaign, and you can play it at the Xbox booth. Halo Studios rebuilt the legendary campaign from scratch with modern visuals, optimized controls, four-player online co-op, three new missions, and an expanded arsenal of weapons and vehicles. What makes this notable is the platform spread: PS5, Xbox, PC, and Switch 2. That's right. Halo on a Nintendo platform. The game releases July 28, so by Gamescom it'll already be out, which makes this demo a "try before you buy on your platform of choice" situation.

    Minecraft Dungeons II

The dungeon crawler sequel gets its first playable build

Minecraft Dungeons II is playable for the first time at Gamescom 2026. The original was a surprisingly good co-op dungeon crawler that stripped Diablo down to its accessible core. The sequel promises tougher enemies, better loot, and the same blocky charm. You can grab a friend and try it at the Xbox booth. The game launches September 29 on Switch and Switch 2. Stranger Than Heaven

A 50-year action adventure with a combat system nobody has tried before

Stranger Than Heaven is one of the more intriguing Xbox booth demos. Spanning 50 years across five Japanese cities and eras, the game features a combat system where you independently control protagonist Makoto Daito's left and right side. Sounds weird, right? The Gamescom 2026 demo lets you play through three of the five city settings. It's a gamble. The kind of thing you want to try before judging.

    Alien: Isolation 2

The horror sequel fans have been begging for

Creative Assembly returns to the Alien franchise with Alien: Isolation 2, playable at the Xbox booth. The original Alien: Isolation is widely considered one of the best survival horror games ever made. So a sequel has big shoes to fill. The Gamescom demo will show whether the team can recapture the cat-and-mouse tension that made the first game so effective. Not much else is known. That's probably intentional. CD Projekt Red returns to The Witcher 3, ONL premiere

CD Projekt Red is bringing The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt - Songs of the Past to Opening Night Live on August 25. This is one of the two confirmed ONL premieres. The other is Metro 2039. Details are thin, but the title suggests new stories set within The Witcher 3's universe. The game is slated for 2027. Forza Horizon 6

New Drift Attack mode and surprise collaborations, playable

Forza Horizon 6 is bringing a new "Drift Attack" mode to the Xbox booth, along with previews of upcoming collaboration content. Turn 10's open-world racing series has been consistently excellent, and the Horizon games are the rare titles where the Gamescom demo actually translates to what you'll play at home. DOOM: The Dark Age Revelations

id Software shows new DOOM content for the first time

DOOM: The Dark Age Revelations gets its world first showing at the Xbox booth. id Software's DOOM reboot and its sequel are reference points for first-person shooter design. So any new content is worth paying attention to. The "Revelations" subtitle suggests this is an expansion or continuation rather than a full sequel, but that's speculation. Either way, new DOOM is new DOOM.

Undead Labs shows the latest build of its zombie survival sim

State of Decay 3 is getting new footage at the Xbox booth. Undead Labs' zombie survival series has always had a cult following for its base-building and community management mechanics. The jump to current-gen hardware should let the studio realize the full scope of what the first two games attempted. The Gamescom showing is the latest look at the game since its initial reveal. Spyro: A Realm Beyond gets its world first showing at Gamescom 2026. Toys for Bob's previous Spyro Reignited Trilogy proved the studio understands what made the original games special. Castlevania: Belmont's Curse

Konami revives the vampire hunting franchise, playable

Castlevania: Belmont's Curse is playable at the Xbox booth. It marks a new entry in the legendary franchise. Konami has been cautious with Castlevania for years, so a playable Gamescom 2026 demo signals real confidence in the product. Details are scarce. But the Belmont name means whip combat, Dracula's castle, and gothic atmosphere are all likely. The recent Castlevania animated series on Netflix rebuilt interest in the IP. The "Dark Arisen" content suggests this is the expansion or enhanced edition. Similar to how the first game's Dark Arisen worked. What Else to Watch at Gamescom 2026

Beyond the 20 games above, several things make this year's Gamescom 2026 highlights worth following even if you can't attend in person.

Nintendo is back as the first official partner. The Gamescom 2026 Nintendo presence is the biggest question mark of the event, because they haven't announced specific booth games yet, but given that Switch 2 launched recently, expect playable demos of upcoming Switch 2 titles. Mario Kart World, Donkey Kong Bananza, and The Duskbloods are all candidates. Whatever Nintendo brings, it'll draw the biggest crowds alongside Xbox.

The gamescom award 2026 has 19 categories this year, with nominees announced August 24. Categories span Microsoft Xbox, Nintendo Switch 2, PC, PlayStation, and mobile platforms. If you're tracking which Gamescom 2026 games the industry thinks are best, the award nominees are a good signal.

Games Done Quick makes its European debut at Gamescom with three days of speedrunning for charity. The gamescom Event Arena runs four days with a cosplay contest on August 29 and a DidYouKnowGaming panel quiz. The gamescom city festival takes over parts of Cologne on August 29-30, and German Federal President Steinmeier is attending for the first time, along with Vice Chancellor Klingbeil and EU Vice President Virkkunen.

If you're trying to catch the best Gamescom 2026 demo sessions from home, Xbox is streaming live on YouTube and Twitch on August 26 and 27 from 4 PM CEST, with developer interviews, gameplay reveals, and ASL interpretation. The Opening Night Live stream on August 25 is where Metro 2039 and The Witcher 3: Songs of the Past get their world premieres.

For attendees, the Xbox booth is in Hall 7 at A-0.61, open August 27-30. Capcom is in Hall 9 at A070. Snail Games is in Hall 8.1 at A-041. Plan your route, because 201,000 square meters is a lot of ground to cover.
