Wuthering Waves is the free-to-play open-world action RPG from Kuro Games that won Players' Voice at The Game Awards 2025. Set on the post-apocalyptic planet of Solaris-3, it drops you into a world recovering from a cataclysm called the Lament. You play as Rover, an amnesiac traveler who pieces together scattered memories while fighting through a story that spans multiple regions, each with its own culture, terrain, and threat.

Since its global launch in May 2024, the game has pulled in over 30 million players and seen revenue surges north of 100% during major updates. It's on PC, mobile, PS5, and coming to Xbox. If you've heard the name but aren't sure what the fuss is about, here's everything you need to know.

What Is the Wuthering Waves Story About?

The world of Solaris-3 was nearly destroyed by the Lament, a disaster that froze most living things in place, like a snapshot of the apocalypse. Civilization rebuilt. But the Lament didn't go away. It left behind Tacet Discords, corrupted Echoes, and regions where reality itself feels thin.

You wake up as Rover with no memory of your past. Almost immediately, you're pulled into a larger conflict involving Resonators, people who can channel special frequencies to fight the Lament's remnants, and the factions that govern what's left of the world. The story moves through multiple regions: the verdant Huanglong, the icy Rinascita, and most recently the futuristic Lahai-Roi district, where version 3.4's Cyberpunk: Edgerunners collaboration takes place.

The narrative gets heavy. Faction politics, ancient secrets buried in ruined research facilities, and a mystery about what Rover actually is. It's not a cheerful open world. The tone sits closer to post-apocalyptic sci-fi than high fantasy.

How Does Wuthering Waves Combat Work?

Combat is what Wuthering Waves is built around. It's fast, fluid, and rewards precision. But what makes it different from other action RPGs?

Each Resonator has a basic attack chain, a Resonance Skill (cooldown-based ability), a Resonance Liberation (ultimate), and a Forte Circuit, a unique mechanic that defines how that character actually plays. Some Fortes turn a healer into a sub-DPS. Others make a support character the best quickswap nuke on your team. The variety keeps team-building interesting.

    The three core systems:

Intro and Outro Skills. When you swap characters with full Concerto energy, the incoming character triggers an Intro Skill and the outgoing one fires an Outro Skill. These chain together. A typical rotation feeds energy on one character, swaps to buff the next, and finishes with a heavy-hitting Liberation. Team synergy matters more than individual stats.

Dodge and Parry. You can dodge almost anything. A perfectly timed dodge triggers Extreme Evasion, which slows time briefly and gives you a free counter window. Some enemies have parryable attacks; hit them with the right timing and you'll stagger them outright. The game doesn't hold your hand through this. Bosses hit hard enough that face-tanking isn't an option.

Echo System. Defeated enemies sometimes drop an Echo, a collectible that equips to your character and grants an active skill. Think of it as capturing an enemy's ability. Some Echoes summon a spectral wolf that charges across the field. Others drop healing zones or fire off targeted blasts. You equip five Echoes per character, and matching sets grant Sonata Effects, passive bonuses that define builds.

The Echo grind is the game's main long-term loop. You farm enemies for specific Echo types, then tune them with randomized substats. Some players love the depth. Others find it time-consuming. Either way, it's central to how the game plays at high levels.

    What Are Wuthering Waves Resonators?

Resonators are the playable characters. Each one has an element (called an Attribute) and a weapon type. There are six Attributes: Spectro, Havoc, Glacio, Fusion, Electro, and Aero. Five weapon types: Sword, Broadblade, Pistols, Gauntlets, and Rectifier.

Unlike some gacha games where characters are locked into rigid roles, Wuthering Waves leans toward hybrid design. A support character might still deal meaningful damage. A main DPS might bring some team utility. It depends on their Forte Circuit, the unique kit mechanic that sets each Resonator apart.

There's no strict tank-healer-DPS trinity. Instead, team-building focuses on three things: elemental synergy for specific content, skill rotation flow, and whether your team can generate enough Concerto energy to chain swaps smoothly.

The free starter roster (Rover, Yangyang, Chixia, and Baizhi) and their initial builds can clear the main story without issue. You'll hit a wall in the Tower of Adversity (the endgame challenge mode) without building a deeper roster, but the game gives you enough free currency to pull a full team over time.

    What Are Wuthering Waves Resonators?

How Does the Wuthering Waves Gacha System Work?

The gacha is called the Convene system. You pull on banners using two types of currency: Lustrous Tides for the standard banner, Radiant Tides for limited-time character and weapon banners. You earn Tides through gameplay, events, and daily logins. You can also convert Astrite, the earnable premium currency, into Tides at a 1:1 ratio.

The rates: a 5-star Resonator or weapon has a 0.8% base chance per pull. There's a hard pity at 80 pulls. If you haven't gotten a 5-star by pull 80, you're guaranteed one on the next. A soft pity kicks in around pull 65, where the rate climbs noticeably.

For limited character banners, if your first 5-star isn't the featured Resonator, the next one is guaranteed to be them. This carries across banners. Lose the 50/50 on one banner, and your next 5-star on any limited character banner is the featured unit. Smart pull planning goes a long way.

The weapon banner works differently. Wuthering Waves uses a separate banner with its own pity counter, and the guaranteed is at 80 pulls with no 50/50. You choose which featured weapon you want and that's what you get at pity. Simple as that.

A Lunite Subscription costs about $5 per month and gives you 300 Lunites (premium currency) upfront plus 90 Astrite daily for 30 days. It's the best value purchase if you do decide to spend. Battle passes exist too, but they're optional cosmetics and resources, not power-gating.

Is Wuthering Waves Actually Free to Play?

Yes. You can clear the entire main story, all exploration content, and a big chunk of endgame as a free player. The game hands out enough Astrite through events, exploration milestones, and daily commissions to guarantee a limited 5-star every two to three patches if you're consistent.

The catch: if you want every new character at full potential, including their Resonance Chains (dupe copies) and signature weapons, that's not happening without spending. But you don't need dupes to clear content. A single copy of a well-built 5-star with farmable Echoes performs fine.

Kuro Games has also given away free 5-star characters through events. The version 3.4 Cyberpunk: Edgerunners collab offers Rebecca, a 5-Star Electro Pistols Resonator, for free through the event. Free 5-star selectors have appeared in anniversary and major patch events. Just don't expect them on a fixed schedule. Treat them as nice surprises.

    Getting Started with Wuthering Waves

New players get a mountain of content. The main story alone runs 40-plus hours across the currently available chapters, with side quests, companion storylines, and open-world exploration easily doubling that. The early game is generous with free pulls. Save your Radiant Tides for limited banners and don't spend Astrite on the standard banner unless you have a specific reason.

A few practical tips: focus on one team of three first rather than spreading resources across everyone. Echo farming matters more than character levels after level 70 or so. Join co-op for tough bosses; three-player multiplayer makes a real difference. And don't sleep on Rover. The protagonist gets free ascension materials and multiple element forms over the course of the story, and some of those forms are genuinely competitive with limited 5-stars.
