Turn based word matches

Words With Friends lets you start a board game with friends and family, then take turns when each player is ready. You can also use Smart Match to find another opponent. The aim is to place letter tiles on the board and finish with more points than the other player.

Crossword style scoring

You form words by connecting your tiles with words already placed on the board. Words encourages you to consider both the word itself and where it lands, since some board spaces affect the score. This format combines spelling, vocabulary, and planning in every turn.

Solo Challenge opponents

When you do not want to wait for another player, you can enter Solo Challenge. Words puts you against themed WordMasters in a series of single player puzzles. These brain teasers become harder as you move forward, giving you a separate activity outside regular matches.

Timed Word Wheel puzzles

Words also includes Word Wheel, a limited time solo mode built around anagrams and connected words. You work with the letters shown and try to solve words before the timer ends. This mode is different from the main board because it focuses on quick answers rather than turn based play.

Goals, collectibles, and profile items

Words tracks word goals that can award keys as you play. Keys help you progress through the Rewards Pass and collect items from themed reward tracks, which run in six week themes. You can also change your profile with stickers, tile styles, and profile frames.

How to play Words With Friends

Words With Friends starts with a board, a rack of letter tiles, and an opponent or solo activity. Choose the mode that fits the time you have, then use the available letters to make connected words. The Words latest version can include the standard board game along with Solo Challenge and Word Wheel activities.

1. Open Words With Friends and select a multiplayer game with a friend, family member, or a Smart Match opponent. If you prefer to play alone, choose Solo Challenge or Word Wheel instead.

2. Look at the letters in your tile rack and find a word that can be placed on the board. In a new match, place the opening word in the required starting area.

3. Connect later words to tiles already on the board, then check the score before confirming your move. Try to use score affecting spaces when they fit your word.

4. Wait for the other player’s response in a multiplayer match, then continue building from the updated board. In Solo Challenge, continue through the WordMaster puzzles as their difficulty increases.

5. Complete listed word goals during play to earn keys and move through the current Rewards Pass. You can then use profile options to select stickers, tile styles, or frames.
