Is ChatGPT Down?

2026-08-05
Check ChatGPT server status, common outage causes, and fixes when ChatGPT isn't working, won't load, or shows errors.
ChatGPT goes down sometimes. It happens to every major online service. When it does, the site won't load, chats freeze mid-response, or you get a "ChatGPT is at capacity" message. Here's how to check if it's actually down and what to do about it.
How to Check If ChatGPT Is Down
Before you troubleshoot your device, confirm it's not just you.
- OpenAI's status page. Go to status.openai.com. This is the official source. Green bars mean everything's operational. Yellow or red means there's a known issue. The page breaks down status by service — ChatGPT, API, Labs, Playground — so you can see what's affected.
- DownDetector. Search "ChatGPT down" and sites like DownDetector show user-reported outage graphs. If there's a spike in reports in the last 15 minutes, it's almost certainly a server-side issue.
- Social media. Check X for "ChatGPT down." If thousands of people are posting about it at the same time, it's not your connection. OpenAI's official accounts sometimes post outage updates.
- Try a different device or network. Open ChatGPT on your phone using cellular data. If it works there but not on your laptop's Wi-Fi, the problem is your network, not OpenAI's servers.
Common ChatGPT Error Messages and Fixes
"ChatGPT is at capacity." This means servers are overloaded. Wait a few minutes and refresh. If it persists, try during off-peak hours. Plus and Pro subscribers get priority access and rarely see this.
"An error occurred." Usually a temporary server hiccup. Refresh the page. If it keeps happening, clear your browser cache and cookies, then try again.
"Network error" or "Something went wrong." Check your internet connection. If other sites load fine, the issue is between your device and OpenAI's servers. Try a VPN — some ISPs or networks block or throttle connections to OpenAI. Or switch from Wi-Fi to cellular data.
Chat history won't load. Your session token might have expired. Log out and log back in. This fixes most history-loading issues.
App crashes on mobile. Update the ChatGPT app to the latest version. If it still crashes, uninstall and reinstall. Your chat history is tied to your account, not the app, so you won't lose anything.
Blank screen or loading spinner. Disable browser extensions, especially ad blockers and privacy tools. Some extensions interfere with ChatGPT's JavaScript. Try incognito/private mode to rule out extension conflicts.
When ChatGPT Is Down: What to Do
If OpenAI's servers are genuinely down, you wait. Outages usually last minutes to hours, rarely longer.
In the meantime, you can use alternatives: Claude (Anthropic), Gemini (Google), or Grok (xAI) all offer similar chat functionality. Most have free tiers.
If you're a Plus or Pro subscriber and outages are frequent, you can contact OpenAI support — but they typically won't issue refunds for brief downtime. It's part of the deal with any cloud service.
Preventing ChatGPT Downtime Frustration
- Save important conversations. ChatGPT auto-saves chat history, but during outages, you might lose the last few messages. For critical work, copy responses to a document as you go.
- Use the offline-capable features. The desktop app caches some functionality. You can at least view recent conversations when the servers are having issues.
- If ChatGPT reliability is critical to your workflow, having a backup AI tool ready (even just a free Claude or Gemini account) takes the pressure off when ChatGPT isn't working.
